Stay home and help recycling collectors this Mandela Day

The paper and paper packaging sector has launched a collaborative initiative to distribute care packs to informal waste collectors in three areas on 15, 16 and 17 July 2020 as part of Mandela Day.

Fibre Circle, the producer responsibility organisation for the paper and paper packaging sector, and the Paper Manufacturers Association of South Africa (PAMSA) will be providing handwashing units, soap, cloth facemask, food vouchers, children’s activity packs and blankets to 1 500 waste collectors in the Industria, Springs and Tshwane areas of Gauteng, where member buy-back centres are located.

Speaking on behalf of Fibre Circle, project coordinator Anele Sololo says, “The effects of COVID-19, lockdown, the winter months and lack of access to water for handwashing has exacerbated the plight of so many people, in particular informal recycling collectors, who live hand to mouth.”

“With handwashing being the first line of defence against the spread of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, we are trying to improve access to simple handwashing facilities at people’s homes,” explains Sololo.

The handwashing unit is a unique South African innovation comprising a plastic bracket that holds an upside-down two-litre soft drink bottle, fitted with a valve. The bracket can be mounted onto a pole or wall and the bottle can be filled at the closest tap.

Stay safe and donate

Fibre Circle and PAMSA are appealing to the public as well as employees in the forestry, pulp and paper sector to support our recycling family by donating R300 (or an amount of your choice) towards a care pack.

While Covid-19 infection rates continue to rise sharply, we are encouraging people to visit the Back-a-Buddy page, donate their preferred amount and we’ll do the work for you.

Does papermaking cause deforestation? We get ask Does papermaking cause deforestation?

We get asked this question a lot. The simple answer is no. In South Africa, trees are grown in sustainable rotations and only a small percentage (less than 10%) of the total area harvested each year. Harvested plots will be replanted with new trees in the same year, making the process sustainable with thousands of hectares of trees of different ages growing all the time.

This is VERY different to deforestation which is the removal of trees - without replanting - for the likes of urban development (shopping malls, our homes, office parks) and agriculture.

For the South African pulp and paper sector, respo For the South African pulp and paper sector, responsibly sourced woodfibre is a non-negotiable.

This is why “Forests for All Together” - @fsc_international’s theme for this year’s #fscfriday - means so much.

As a sector we are celebrating the importance of bringing people together to responsibly care for forests – from environmentalists to big business, from Indigenous Peoples to communities and governments, from forest workers to careful consumers, it is essential that we work together to care for our forests.

Buy locally produced paper as far as possible and check the source.
